The Sociology Research Unit of the Athens Institute for Education and Research (ATINER) organizes A Panel on Southern European Countries and the most Recent Phase of Neoliberal Globalization: Sociological Insights on Economies, Societies and Polities Navigating into the Crisis, 2-5 May 2016, Athens, Greece as part of the 10th Annual International Conference on Sociology. The panel aims to discuss theoretical perspectives and empirical research findings on recent economic, social and political changes in southern European societies. It is well known that the most recent phase of neoliberal globalization has affected these societies more than others. Increasingly severe restrictions on public budgets, waves of privatization in the industry and in public utilities, ongoing reforms of the political system and public administration, undoubtedly produce major consequences in all spheres of social life. Moreover, the public debt crisis has further accelerated the process of economic and political restructuring underway. In this special session we intend to discuss these changes, with reference to the theoretical models that enable us to understand their nature and extent. Wide space will be devoted also to the research results that explore the effects of these changes in all major dimensions of social life, at national and / or regional level. A special priority will be given to comparative analyses involving different southern European countries/ regions.
