The Department of Linguistics, University of Mumbai under the GIAN scheme is organizing a Special Lecture Series on the topics in Syntax-Semantics of Indo-Aryan languages. The Lecture Series will exert special emphasis on the Western Indo-Aryan languages like Marathi, Gujarati, Kutchi, Konkani, Sindhi, Punjabi among others.

Many of these languages have not been adequately described in the light of latest theoretical developments and tool-kits of Modern Linguistics. Detailed description of phenomena in these languages may also challenge the existing linguistic theories and lead to further theorization.

This workshop/lecture series will benefit from the expertise of Prof. Rajesh Bhatt (UMass, Amherst, USA) who is the guest faculty in the workshop. The topics to be covered in it include case, ergativity, non-nominative subjects, agreement, correlatives, scrambling, tense-aspect, passivization and causativization among others. It also includes assignments and class-presentations by the participants of the work done by them during the workshop
