This panel invites papers that examine genres of life writing (autobiography, biography and memoir) in African literature in general or that analyze the work of specific writers. Discussion might cover the creative processes that are unique to life writing (remembering, forgetting, selecting, arranging, revising, supplementing, etc.) and the types of insights that are afforded though a heightened focus on personal experience. Papers could also investigate the complex relationship between life writing and fiction, given that African fiction is often grounded in realism and embroiled in the everyday—normally the terrain of life writing. Arguments about the place of life writing in the popular culture /literary culture dichotomy are also encouraged.
