The Summer Schools of Slavonic Studies offering intensive Czech language courses are organised by several public universities in the Czech Republic: Charles University (Faculty of Arts, Prague), Charles University Institute for Language and Preparatory Studies, PoděbradyMasaryk University (Faculty of Arts, Brno),Palacký University in Olomouc (Faculty of Arts, Olomouc), University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice (Faculty of Arts, České Budějovice) and the University of West Bohemia in Plzeň. The courses are held during the summer months (July – September), their length ranges from 3 to 4 weeks depending on the course content determined by each Summer School and are designed for foreign students, teachers, translators and interpreters and other experts active in the field of Czech/Slavonic studies. Due to their broad scope they are, however, open to anyone else who is interested in the Czech language, literature, history and culture. The Summer Schools offer language courses at various levels of proficiency, seminars on the Czech literature, culture and history, free-time activities including theatrical, musical and dance performances, trips etc.

Scholarship includes:

  • Free board and lodging (incl. breakfast, lunch and dinner)
  • coverage of course fees,
  • free access to cultural events, trips organized within a Summer School course.

Scholarship does not include:

  • International transport costs,
  • Costs connected to Visa issuance,
  • Insurance costs.

Who can apply?

For 2018, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport of the Czech Republic (MEYS) offers a limited number of scholarships for participation in the Summer School courses to applicants from the following countries (listed alphabetically):

Eligible countries:

Albania, Austria, Belgium – Flemish Community, Belgium – French Community, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Canada (Alberta), China, Colombia, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Malta, Mexico, Mongolia, Montenegro, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Korea, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Ukraine, the United Kingdom and Vietnam.

Scholarships can only be awarded to applicants who are nominated by the competent authorities in the aforementioned countries (the selection of applicants is usually performed by the respective foreign government agencies; in several cases by the Czech diplomatic missions).

Application should be accompanied with a Curriculum Vitae written in Czech or English. The competent receiving authority may require other documents (such as cover letter, certificate on language skills etc..)

The number of scholarships and their distribution among individual Summer Schools is established by the MEYS. Please, consult the authority receiving scholarship applications about which institution providing the Summer School course you may apply to.

Filled in applications with all appendixes should be submitted to the respective receiving institution (it can be either a foreign government agency; in several cases by the Czech diplomatic missions). Further information should be provided by the Czech diplomatic mission).

Applications sent directly to the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport of the Czech Republic or to the institution providing Summer School courses by individual applicants will not be processed (Don't send your application neither to the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic nor to the Summer School!).

The deadline is set by the receiving institution, all nominations should reach the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport by 31st March 2018.

Selection of candidates:

The receiving institutions should send their nominations to the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports by 31st March 2018. The receiving institution nominates i) regular nominees, and ii) substitutes (up to twice as many as regular nominees).

Successful candidates will be contacted directly by the Summer School organizers.

A scholarship holder is obliged, once he/she obtains information on acceptance, to confirm his/her attendance at the Summer School. If an admitted scholarship-holder cannot attend the Summer School concerned, he/she is obliged to inform immediately the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (contact e-mail: lucie.gregurkova@msmt.cz) or the relevant contact person at the Summer School.

The MEYS reserves the right to change the place and term of the Summer School course covered by the scholarship. Scholarship holders are not guaranteed to be placed at the Summer School requested in his/her application.

Health Insurance:

Health insurance is NOT provided to scholarship holders, who are advised to arrange a medical insurance policy for the period of their stay in the Czech Republic. More information can be provided by the consular section of the Czech Embassy in your country; EU/EEA medical insurance system is described on the website of the Health Insurance Bureau.
