We are an internationally leading research institute of Saarland University, located in the heart of Europe, close to France and Luxemburg. Headed by Prof. Christoph Wittmann, our team of dedicated scientists works on systems biology, systems biotechnology, and systems metabolic engineering. We design tailor-made cell factories and bioprocesses for industrial applications. We provide cutting-edge technology platforms for systems-wide omics analysis of microbes (including transcriptomics, 13C fluxomics, and metabolomics) and their genomic engineering, highly-equipped bioprocess laboratories for cultivation, as well as software tools for computational biology. Since 20 years, we successfully act as partners in collaborative projects and cooperate globally with universities, research institutes, and industrial companies. Our PhD alumni work in leading research institutes and biotech companies. 

Our offer
We offer 2 PhD positions (TVL E13 50%, fixed term contract 3 years), dedicated to systems metabolic engineering of industrial microorganisms. The positions are open from January, 1 2019. The following topics are available

- PhD position in systems metabolic engineering of industrial microorganisms - Strain engineering (Ref. W1434)

- PhD position in biochemical engineering of industrial microorganisms - Process engineering (Ref. W1435)
    
Your role
Within the project, you will design and create novel producers to convert renewables into added-value products. A focus will be on the development and application of molecular tools for the soil bacterium Pseudomonas putida. You will then apply these techniques to design and create superior strains (W1434). Another focus will be on the pretreatment and characterization of the lignocellulosic raw material, to be used by the microorganism as substrate. Bioprocess development will be supported by omics analyses, involving collaboration with national and international partners (W1435). You will present and publish the data at international meetings and in high-impact scientific journals. In your work, you will apply the following techniques:

- Genetic engineering of Pseudomonas putida

- Strain characterization in shake flasks and parallelized mini-bioreactors

- Raw material depolymerization and process-related analytics

- Omics analysis, including 13C fluxomics, metabolomics and transcriptomics

- Bioprocess development for newly designed producer strains

Your profile

- Very good master degree in biotechnology, bioengineering or a related field with a solid background in quantitative bioengineering

- Out-going personality and excellent teamwork skills

- High self-motivation and passion for science

- Excellent communication skills; including English language
