The Technische Informationsbibliothek (TIB) – German National Library of Science and Technology – Program Area C, Research and Development, is looking to employ a

PhD Student (E 13 TV-L)

to start as soon as possible. Initial appointment will be for 3 years. The working time is 75 % of the regular weekly working time (part-time, 29.85 weekly hours).

The PhD Student will be a member of the Learning and Skill Analytics research group (Dr. Gábor Kismihók) in the TIB Research and Development department.

The candidate’s competence area should be rooted in the area of Technology Enhanced Learning or a related field (data science, education, educational psychology, information management). He/she should be able to think creatively, have solid academic writing skills, grasp new knowledge quickly, be able to combine abstract reasoning with concrete problem solving skills, and be interested in tackling complex challenges.


The objective of this interdisciplinary PhD project is to conduct research on the application of goal setting theory and underlying methods in relation to learning processes and individual skill development. The successful candidate will need to establish novel approaches towards the validation and support of goal setting in a number of different educational contexts (e.g. Higher Education, Massive Open Online Courses, Digital Libraries). Therefore the successful candidate will need to:

  • design and carry out empirical studies and controlled experiments together with partner organizations in Germany and elsewhere in Europe
  • publish and present research results in top-tier research journals and conferences


  • University degree (Master or equivalent) preferably in data science (or related fields) with excellent grades and a demonstrable interest in the area of learning analytics
  • Experience with research design and management
  • Experience with R, Python or similar environments
  • Well-developed analytical skills, creativity, precision, and perseverance
  • Ability to work in a team and independently
  • Highly motivated to pursue a career in science
  • Excellent command of both written and spoken English
  • Willingness to travel


  • A Msc/Research Master in social science (preferably education, psychology, or sociology)
  • High thesis grade
  • Publication(s) in peer reviewed journal(s)
  • Honours distinction
  • Proficiency in German
