for a fixed term from January 2, 2019 to March 31, 2020. The position is for work in the project Rationality in Perception: Transformations of Mind and Cognition 1250–1550. There is a six-month trial period for the position.

The project aims to investigate late medieval theories of mind and cognition focusing on the relation between intellect and the senses, the activity of perception, and the development of models of faculty psychology in the period 1250-1550. Interested applicants can find a description of the project here: For the position being advertised, candidates are expected to conduct research on late medieval theories of perception, including transcription of medieval sources in manuscript form, especially from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. More precise research tasks will be decided together with the project’s PI and always subjected to his approval.

According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, the appointee must hold a doctoral degree and have the ability to conduct independent scientific work. Solid knowledge of medieval Latin and experience in editing manuscripts are obligatory requirements. Background in Philosophy is an advantage but not obligatory. In addition to research, the successful applicant is also expected to contribute to the activities of the research project, namely assisting the PI to organize a major international conference in 2019. The person should have good social skills and have a pro-active attitude toward his/her work.

According to the Government Decree on Universities, postdoctoral researchers are required to be proficient in Finnish or Swedish. They must also have at least satisfactory spoken and written skills in the other of these two languages. Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application.

The salary is based on the University of Helsinki salary scale. For a postdoc the starting salary will be 3 100 euros/month, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience.
