2019 marks the 100th anniversary of Sherwood Anderson’s influential book, Winesburg, Ohio. The book has inspired so many discussions and debates over the years, from whether or not the book is a collection of short stories or a novel to how it has defined or contributed to the definition of the grotesque in literature. It is a very American, and very Midwestern, literary work.
As a book firmly rooted in the Midwest, the Society for the Study of Midwestern Literature wants to celebrate Winesburg, Ohio’s centenary at the ALA Conference by inviting paper proposals that explore all aspects of the novel or its influences. Paper topics may include new perspectives on Anderson’s creative process, cultural or textual influences on Winesburg, Ohio’s composition, a new or revised take on individual characters within the book or their symbolism, perspectives on whether or not Anderson’s book was truly “revolting” from the village, discussions of the book’s influence on writers throughout the twentieth and into the twenty-first century, arguments for comparative perspectives of Winesburg and its characters to pop culture settings, and many other possibilities.
