The University of Luxembourg is seeking to hire a highly motivated and an outstanding researcher in the area of Earth Observation (EO) using GNSS and other signals for its Interdisciplinary Centre of Security and Trust (SnT), within the Signal Processing and Communications (SigCom) research group, led by Prof. Björn Ottersten and Dr. Symeon Chatzinotas.

Organization

SnT carries out interdisciplinary research in secure, reliable and trustworthy ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) systems and services, often in collaboration with governmental, industrial and international partners.  SnT is active in several national projects funded by National Research Fund (FNR) and local industries, and international research projects funded by the EU FP7 programme, H2020 programme and the European Space Agency (ESA). The SigCom research group carries out research activities in the areas of signal processing for wireless communication systems including satellite communications and radar systems, and signal, image and data processing aspects of computer vision. Currently, SigCom is expanding its research activities in exploring several emerging fields such as Earth Observation using Signals of Opportunity (SoOp) such as GNSS (GNSS-Reflectometry), SatCom (DVB-S2/X), or LTE/5G new signals. Your Role

The successful candidate is expected to perform the following tasks:

  • Research on the potential use of new SoOp for EO in a bi-static radar configuration.
  • Developing novel techniques/algorithms to retrieve geophysical parameters using SoOp including GNSS, DVB-S2/X (SatCom), LTE and new 5G signals.
  • Contribute to the development of prototypes that help to demonstrate the theoretical algorithms.
  • Disseminating results through scientific publications and conferences
  • Coordinating research projects and preparing project deliverables
  • Preparing new research proposals to attract industrial, national and European projects
  • Providing assistance in the supervision of PhD students

Your Profile

  • A PhD degree in Telecommunication Engineering, or Electrical Engineering or Computer Science/engineering with a focus on remote sensing and EO.
  • Sound publication track record in one or more of the following areas:
    • Microwave remote sensing
    • SAR
    • Radiometry, GNSS reflectometry
    • Bistatic / multistatic radar,
    • EO using SoOp
  • Knowledge of passive/active microwave remote sensing techniques, microwave radiometry, radar, reflectometry.
  • Strong programming skills in MATLAB, Python or C++
  • Experience working with industrial projects or public funded research projects related to EO is highly desirable.
  • Highly committed, excellent team-worker, and strong critical thinking skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
