YOUR TASKS

  • At least 70% of your assignment will be spent on scientific research in conformity with the research activities of the Marine Biology Research Group (www.marinebiology.ugent.be) in the field of Marine Biology, with a focus on the ecology of benthic and/or pelagic fauna; you actively participate in fundraising through submission of research projects and achieve a highly qualitative research output.
  • You will assist in teaching activities at the bachelor’s and/or master’s level; in particular in the education of the Department of Biology, including lectures and coordination of practical exercises and tutorials, related to courses in the fields of Marine Ecology and Biodiversity.
  • You will counsel bachelor and master students for their bachelor’s project, master’s project or master’s dissertation.
  • You will counsel doctoral students.
  • You assist in internal and external services of the Department of Biology.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • You hold a doctoral degree in Science: Biology or Marine Sciences, or in Applied Biological Sciences or a subject considered relevant by the selection committee. For diplomas awarded outside the European Union, a certificate of equivalence (NARIC) must be submitted. The degree requirements need to be fulfilled at the start of your appointment.
  • You have distinguished yourself as a promising researcher during your doctorate.
  • You have already conducted research within the field Marine Biology, closely related to the research activities of the Marine Biology Research Group within the field of the ecology of benthic and/or pelagic fauna (www.marinebiology.ugent.be), endorsed by publications in international and widely distributed peerreviewed journals.
  • Communications and presentations at national and international conferences are considered an asset.
  • You have experience in leading research activities which have resulted in Master and Bachelor theses in the field of Marine Biology.
  • You are profoundly interested in coaching students in the Bachelor’s, Master’s and/or Advanced Master’s programmes.
  • You have good communicative, didactical skills and organizational skills to support academic education at the Bachelor and Master level, in English. Good knowledge of Dutch is an asset.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

  • We offer you a oneyear appointment. The appointment may be renewed once for three years at the most, on condition that the previous term was given a positive evaluation. The term of renewal begins immediately after the first term has expired. Attention: If you have been previously appointed as a postdoctoral assistant at a university within the Flemish Community, you cannot apply for this position.
  • Your appointment will start on 1 September 2019 at the earliest and will end on 30 September 2020 at the latest.
  • Your remuneration will be determined according to salary scale AAP5. More information about our salary scales.
