Job Purpose

  • This post forms part of the School of Education’s strategic commitment to the strengthening of research excellence in the area of Education Policy 
  • The post will support the development of research underpinning our new Educational Leadership Academy as well as the expansion of the School’s Masters programmes in Birmingham and overseas. It is expected that the successful applicant will provide excellent research leadership, and contribute to teaching, including PhD supervision. 
  • This post will be based in the Department for Teacher Education which is one of the largest HEI departments for postgraduate teacher education in the country and which hosts our Masters in School Improvement and Educational Leadership. The Department is committed to playing an increasing role in the provision of continuing professional development (CPD) to teachers and leaders in the UK and overseas, in particular on our Dubai campus, underpinned by world leading research in the areas of education policy, school improvement, leading and managing educational change and teacher development. 
  • Our intention is to be recognised internationally for research that is of the highest quality and delivers theoretical and empirical insights that are agenda-setting and have a major impact on policy and practice in the UK and overseas. 
  • There is much scope for an appointee to this Chair/Readership to boost the quality and reach of our research, capitalising on the opportunities provided by the development of the Educational Leadership Academy, the College of Social Sciences Leadership Institute and the Higher Education Futures Institute. 
  • There will be an opportunity for the post holder to develop links with colleagues in the Higher Education Futures Institute at UoB, exploring opportunities for collaborative research linking HE and School Policy agendas. 
  • This Chair/Readership in Education Policy is likely to build upon and complement the Department’s (and the wider School’s) existing strengths and to significantly increase our likelihood of attracting external research income and securing publications in 4* rated outputs, thereby supporting the College and School’s objectives. 
  • The successful candidate will be able to make a strong contribution to REF 2021 as well as to teaching quality assessments, programme development and research funding applications. 
  • The successful candidate will make a substantial contribution to the leadership and succession planning in the School. 


Main Duties

  • To provide leadership in securing research funding in the area of Education Policy 
  • To provide leadership in securing publications in highly ranked journals which are of 4* quality. 
  • To bolster research capacity in the area of Education Policy in collaborative research grant applications building on the existing strengths of the School of Education 
  • To guide Departmental colleagues in targeting journals in order to secure the publication of 4* outputs. 
  • To undertake a leading managerial role as appropriate in either the School of Education or the College of Social Sciences 
  • To participate in the development of innovative new programmes that appeal to international markets in particular. 
  • To supervise and examine dissertations at postgraduate Masters and PhD levels. 
  • To contribute to debates in the areas of Education Policy beyond the University, and critically at the interface of University and important external stakeholders in order to foster engagement, influence and impact.
  • To develop and/or sustain key external partnerships which underpin the delivery of teaching and research collaborations. 
  • To take full part in the Schools’ overall research and teaching activities, as well as contributing to those of other Schools and Departments, where beneficial. 
  • To contribute to the development of academic leaders within the University, where appropriate. 
  • To contribute to the determination of the academic quality standards framework throughout the University. 
  • To ensure that the teaching activity achieves the educational quality standards of the School and University. 
  • To make major contributions to the broader theoretical and/or methodological debates of the discipline through rigorous scholarship and/or original or impactful research. 
  • To publish the outcomes of this scholarship in leading research and/or professional journals and/or books which further develop the University’s reputation in the area of Education Policy 
  • To take an active part in the life of the Department, School and College and its Centres, including participation in research seminars and attendance at Departmental meetings . 
  • To promote and market the work of the Department, School, College and Centres in the School Improvement subject area both nationally and internationally. 


Person Specification 

  • Evidence of an outstanding and sustained international research profile with significant and substantial outputs of international quality. 
  • Evidence of a sustained record of generating and managing research grant income. 
  • Evidence of outstanding academic leadership and a proven ability to lead, develop and motivate colleagues. 
  • Established record of accomplishment as an experienced and innovative education leader in Education Policy •Evidence of developing and delivering excellence and enhancement in design and delivery of teaching, both undergraduate and postgraduate, which delivers research-intensive teaching that engages students and leads to excellent outcomes 
  • Evidence of activities which enhance the student learning experience (for example in enhancing the curriculum, learning activities/teaching materials, assessment, evaluating the impact on the student learning experience) or which enhance the teaching and learning performance of colleagues. •Excellent presentation skills and a collegial attitude. 
  • Experience of working with, and mentoring/leading other staff in an education, or similar environment. •Interest in working with teams who span educational research methodologies. 
  • Ability to work across institutional and discipline boundaries. Desirable 
  • Willingness to assume a wider leadership role within the School. 
  • Willingness to engage with the media.
