The Bio and Circular Economy research group at Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences focuses on environmental technology, and bioenergy and biorefining with the ultimate goal to promote a cleaner and safer future for the benefit of people and the environment. The group covers research from molecular biology level up to waste and wastewater treatment as well as biorefinery and power plants and their integration into urban and industrial systems. The group has active collaboration with urban actors, industry and several national and international research organizations.

Job description

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow’s position focuses on environmental technologies and bioprocess engineering for conducting high-level scientific research in living lab environments. The primary role of the Postdoctoral Research Fellow is to design, set up and operate different pilot scale processes for resource recovery (energy, nutrients, metals, CO2) from urban wastes and wastewaters. The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will be part of multidisciplinary Urban Circular Economy Platform that combines technological solutions, societal dynamics and new business models. The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will thus have a possibility to engage in co-operation with different research fields.

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will have an opportunity to work in different projects and participate in supervising BSc, MSc and PhD students or in teaching. It is expected that research to be carried out by the postdoctoral researcher results in peer-reviewed articles published in relevant academic journals. The Postdoctoral Research Fellow has also possibility to participate in the development of new research initiatives and teaching provided by the unit as well as other general activities of the unit.

Requirements

The applicant should have a doctoral degree in environmental engineering, civil engineering, bioengineering, or a related field. The applicant should have experience on research work related to processes in environmental engineering and/or bioprocess engineering in laboratory or pilot scale with the motivation to engage in living lab environments. Experience in working in pilot scale environments is highly appreciated. The applicant should be fluent in both written and verbal English. Driving license is required due to working in living lab environments.

The successful applicant is a highly motivated and ambitious researcher. Proficiency to carry out goal-oriented work, good cooperation abilities, and high-class skills to deliver oral and written presentations will be emphasized.

We offer

The position will be filled for a fixed-term period of 2-4 years. The planned starting date is 1st of September 2019 or as mutually agreed. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. The position of a Postdoctoral Research Fellow is placed on the job demands levels 5-6 (teaching and research staff). A typical starting salary of Postdoctoral Research Fellow is around 3220-3580 EUR/month.
