The Department of Philosophy at the University of Birmingham seeks to appoint a Post-doctoral Research Fellow to work on the ERC-funded project 'A Framework for Metaphysical Explanation in Physics' (FraMEPhys), led by Dr Alastair Wilson. 

FraMEPhys, a major 5-year project funded by the European Research Council, is investigating the nature of explanation in physics, with particular focus on metaphysical and non-causal explanations (including grounding explanations, geometrical explanations and unificatory explanations). The aim of FraMEPhys is to combine recent progress in metaphysics, philosophy of science and philosophy of physics to enhance our understanding of the nature of metaphysical explanation in physics. Case studies of special interest include curved spacetime, closed timelike curves and quantum entanglement.

Job summary

  • To create and contribute to the creation of knowledge by undertaking a specified range of activities within the EU funded project 'A Framework for Metaphysical Explanation in Physics' (FraMEPhys). To investigate, in particular, the application of structural-equations models for causal explanation to metaphysical explanation in physics.
  • Conduct original philosophical research in the areas of metaphysics, philosophy of science and/or philosophy of physics.
  • Develop and publish research outputs, individually and/or collaboratively.
  • Participate in planning and execution of project research events and activities.

Main duties

The responsibilities may include some but not all of the responsibilities outlined below.

  • Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, with assistance of a mentor.
  • Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding.
  • Disseminate research findings in publications, at conferences and research seminars, etc.
  • Undertake management/administration arising from research.
  • Co-supervise PhD students.
  • Undertake limited undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities within the Department of Philosophy where this supports FraMEPhys objectives.
  • Contribute to Departmental/School research-related activities and research-related administration.
  • Contribute to public engagement activities of manifest benefit to the College and the University, under supervision of a project leader.
  • Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines.

Skills and Experience

  • PhD on a topic in metaphysics, philosophy of science, or philosophy of physics.
  • High level analytical capability.
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly.
  • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively.
  • Ability to co-ordinate own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort.
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes.
  • Ability to contribute to the planning and organising of the research programme and/or specific research project.
