Extent of Employment:

  • 40 hours per week

Main tasks:


  • Project-oriented research in the area of biomedical research on ageing with the goal to achieve a postdoctoral lecture qualification (“Habilitation” in the Austrian University system) with a focus on mitochondrial metabolism and cellular senescence.
  • In addition, the candidate should support ongoing research projects at the IBA.
  • Independent acquisition of third-party funding, independent publications in peer reviewed international journals.


  • The candidate should contribute to teaching (in German language) in ageing research, biochemistry, and molecular cell biology.
  • The position also involves the supervision of Bachelor and Master students as well as technical staff.


  • The candidate should contribute to administrative and organizational tasks in research and teaching.

Required Qualifications:

  • a PhD in Biology or Chemistry or a related discipline
  • postdoctoral experience or adequate professional experience
  • original scientific achievements beyond the PhD thesis
  • publications in peer-reviewed international scientific journals
  • Independent research in metabolic regulation and enzymology
  • research experience in mitochondrial biology, structural biology and bioinformatics
  • experience in acquisition of third-party funding
  • international mobility
  • good knowledge of German language (at least B1, if not mother language) which will allow to hold lectures and courses in German language after no more than two years

The position is available for 6 years, starting from 2nd of November 2019. During the first year of employment it is possible to conclude a 'qualification agreement' which is the core part of a University career position. If the terms of the qualification agreement are fulfilled it will lead to a continuous career at the University, resulting in the position of an Associate Professor and a permanent employment.


The minimum gross salary (stipulated by collective agreement) for this position amounts to € 3.804 per month (14 times). The salary will be higher if you have worked in a similar position before. Furthermore, the university has numerous attractive offers:
