Applications are invited for a full time fixed term 18 month post for a Research Fellow/Senior Research Fellow at the University of Southampton.

You will work on the interdisciplinary UKRI-funded programme National Centre of Excellence for IoT Systems Security. The Centre’s consortium comprises 12 universities (University College London, Imperial College London, Lancaster University, University of Oxford, University of Warwick, Cardiff University, University of Edinburgh, University of Surrey, Newcastle University, University of Nottingham, University of Bristol, and the University of Southampton).  The consortium will work together to explore critical issues in privacy, ethics, trust, reliability, acceptability, and security.

The University of Southampton team, led by Professor Dame Wendy Hall and Dr Kieron O’Hara, will be responsible for the “Cyberphysical Social Machines (CP-SOCIAM)” project, the aim of which is to use a combination of in-the-wild experimentation with monitoring data from IoT devices and existing social machines to study the emergence of cyberphysical social machines. The initial focus will be health-related and will look at how devices such as activity trackers, in the context of social machines are helping redefine healthcare methodologies and promote health and wellbeing, e.g. by considering the collection and dissemination of social machine participants’ practical wisdom about managing health related conditions. CP-SOCIAM will explore what might enable such communities to flourish and build public value, and what might cause them to fail. The work will focus on emerging types of trustworthy social interactions facilitated by IoT devices, and consider the design of institutions and infrastructures that will support and foster warranted trust in such interactions. This will involve researching health-related devices/applications, and wider domains as required, in considering the policy, standards, and institutional support requirements for data sharing.

You should possess a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in Computer Science, Web Science or related discipline and expertise in one or more of the following areas will be advantageous: web science and web technologies, web analytics, decentralised systems, linked and open data, privacy, trust and provenance, social computation, Internet of Things.
