The goal of the ICCE is to promote academic and technical exchange on coastal related studies covering a wide range of topics including coastal waves, nearshore currents, coastal structures, sediment transport, coastal morphology, beach nourishment, natural hazards and coastal management.
On behalf of Engineers Australia, the ICCE2020 Local Organising Committee welcomes you to the 37th International Conference on Coastal Engineering in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The 13 member Committee is responsible for conference planning and organisation, led by Co-Chairs Professor Ian Turner (University of NSW) and Mr Ed Couriel (NSW Department of Finance, Services and Innovation) representing both the research and practicing strengths of the profession.
We especially welcome the participation of postgraduate student and early career delegates at the Sydney conference, recognising that the future of coastlines around the world is in your hands.
The prestigious ICCE biennial series is organised under the auspices of the Coastal Engineering Research Council (CERC) of Coasts, Oceans, Ports and Rivers Institute (COPRI), American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). 2020 will mark the 70th year since the first ICCE was hosted in Long Beach, California USA, in 1950.
Coastal engineering is a discipline of fundamental importance to Australia, the world’s largest nation completely surrounded by oceans. With 85% of Australia’s population living in a narrow coastal fringe, Australia continues to experience expanding coastal development, with coastal activities ranging from trade to tourism contributing significantly to the nation’s economy. The coastal engineering professional plays a critical national role in underpinning port and trade route development as well as guiding the nation’s response to a changing climate.
The membership of the ICCE2020 Local Organising Committee comprises both diversity and national representation from across Australia and New Zealand. The members of this committee are all committed to the ongoing development of the discipline of coastal engineering internationally.
Sydney is a spectacular host city for ICCE 2020, boasting an iconic harbour, bridge, cultural venues, international cuisine and surf beaches. More importantly, Sydney is a truly cosmopolitan City, with a rich diversity of peoples from all around the world who call it their home. Sydney’s stunning coastal setting and convenient international and national transport linkages provide an attractive and accessible venue to host the 37th ICCE. The newly opened Sydney International Convention Centre that is ICCE2020’s home for a week is located on the harbour foreshore, in the heart of the city centre.
