The proliferation of objects with connectivity capabilities has created unprecedented opportunities around the topic of Internet of Things. In particular, cyber- physical systems (CPS) erase smoothly the limit between virtual and physical worlds. While representing the enabling technology for the seamless convergence of analog and digital spaces, such systems raise challenging questions on the process of creating innovative interactions with users as well as for delivering value-added services.

Numerous approaches, ideas and techniques to leverage cyber-physical systems focus on specific technological dependent problems, cutting down middleware to a bridge between two systems or protocols. Indeed, approaches proposed in the research literature often produce ad-hoc solutions. In industry, practitioners rely on solutions that are generally developed with little consideration of any other solution already running in the deployment environment. This leads to a situation where the usage scenarios of products are narrowed to simple Event-Condition-Action (ECA) demonstrations. In such situations, the devices taking part to the interactions must be technology-enabled (i.e., their design must have foreseen this interaction scenario and the associated technologies). However, the increasing number of industrialized devices already available in stores calls for new mechanisms to enable open interactions (not foreseen). Finally, the proliferation of diverse middleware solutions, frameworks and methods for improving interoperability is a testimony that standardization processes regularly fail. Con- sequently, the pervasiveness and ubiquity of systems is lost.

The purpose of M4CPS is to foster inspiring research that would open new track for more seamless interactions in the cyber-physical space. M4CPS is the place to explore innovative middleware solutions to  enable Cyber-Physical Systems to autonomously create opportunistic interactions that would promote new services leveraging sharing of sensing, storage and computation resources.

The workshop is a forum for practitioners and researchers novel ideas to address the challenges of services discovery, dynamic devices interconnection and opportunistic resources sharing in the cyber-physical space. To that end, we seek contributions on:

  • Novel, generic and dynamic Middleware solutions to seamless and opportunistic interactions
  • Reactive and contextual aware dynamic Middleware
  • Frameworks for easing the development of new services for CPS
  • Practical algorithms and tool support for CPS management
