Winter conditions are changing, with rapid reductions in northern-hemisphere snowcover. This is of huge importance for alpine ecosystems, which are disproportionately biodiverse, and considered a sentinel for climate change due to observed rapid changes in plant communities. However, belowground diversity and biogeochemistry of soil organisms is poorly reconciled, hindering our ability to predict the impacts of change to the whole ecosystem. This project will explore snow-cover gradients and how they shape the microbial ecology of the European alpine. It will ask how we can predict the impacts of change through a combination of exciting field surveys and sampling, interrogation of the microbial community, and an in-situ transplantation experiment.

The decline of insect biomass over several decades, which has been observed in a number of regions, is a major threat to biodiversity and ecosystem services. For Switzerland, there is contrasting evidence about the degree of insect biomass decline and the importance of the various potential drivers is controversially discussed. Entomologists of WSL, FiBL, CSCF, the Swiss Ornithological Institute and Agroscope have teamed up bring together existing data in order to improve the evidence base. Two PostDoc positions will be opened in order to analyze existing data and learn more about the degree and nature of insect biomass decline and about its drivers.

This project will offer an exciting opportunity to learn upcoming structural biology methods, and to apply these to a vaccinology project. The key methodological focus of the project will be micro electron diffraction (micro-ED), a method of determining protein structures that will become a mainstream method over the next five years.

The assistant or associate professor will join the Research Group for Food Microbiology and Hygiene. The group contributes to healthy and safe food through quantitative studies of the microbial ecology of food products as affected by product characteristics, processing and packaging. The Research Group has excellent laboratory facilities to conduct experimental research using cell cultures, Class 2 pathogens and GMO at levels 1 and 2.
