The Synthetic Organic Chemistry (SOC) group is part of the Sustainable Chemistry research theme. The SOC group is recruiting a Research Technician for supporting our research programmes that are mainly funded by NWO and STW grants. Our research is dedicated to the development of novel and sustainable synthetic methodologies directed to complex and societally important molecules for which currently no (sustainable) preparations exist. Transition-metal catalyzed C-H activation, C-terminal peptide activation, organocatalysis, template-directed small peptide cyclization and the total synthesis of natural products are the main research lines. Parts of our research is conducted in close collaboration with industrial partners

Chemically modified oligonucleotides will be designed to improve the drug-like properties of RNA interference (RNAi) drugs by improving enzymatic stability in blood plasma as well as enhance gene silencing potential. These modified oligonucleotide drugs will be encapsulated in nanocarriers or will be conjugated to targeting ligands. The functionality of the engineered drugs and formulations will be evaluated in suitable in vitro cell culture experiments. The candidate will be involved in a European collaboration, conduct original interdisciplinary research involving organic chemistry and cell and molecular biology, bioengineering, and 3D cell culture. The position includes research, training courses and exchange programs.
