The lignocellulose content of plant biomass represents a major source of renewable carbon that can be used to produce biofuels, or other useful chemicals. However, a major obstacle to maximizing these conversions is the nature of lignin itself which encases the cellulose fibres and comprises 10-30% of the total dry weight of lignocellulose. Lignin is an aromatic polymer which has proved relatively difficult to process, but which contains a fascinating chemistry which could provide a wide range of chemicals, currently obtained from petroleum, so lignin valorisation represents an interesting challenge for biocatalysis and chemical catalysis.
With this in mind, this one-day symposium aims to bring together researchers from academia and industry at all levels interested in the chemistry, processing and applications of lignin in order to share the science, address the challenges in the field and build collaborations for the future.
The symposium will be highly interdisciplinary and will be co-sponsored by the BBSRC, a major funder of biotechnology-related research within the UK. The BBSRC's Networks in Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy (BBSRC NIBB) aim to foster cross disciplinary communities and a number of participants in this meeting are members of the lignocellulose-related BBSRC NIBB, the Lignocellulosic Biorefinery Network (LBNet). The Royal Society of Chemistry is happy to help support the vital role of chemistry in these networks.
With these points in mind the symposium will aim to cover the following four topics with a range of presentations from UK and international speakers.
- Lignin structure
- Bio-catalytic conversion
- Chemo-catalytic breakdown
The programme of this meeting will feature both oral, flash poster and conventional poster presentations.
