The International Conference on Gender and Education aims to engage researchers, academics and policy makers in discussions and debates concerning the interplay between gender related issues and educational dynamics. This conference will explore the consequences and reflections of hierarchical structures in organizational settings, societal resistance involving gender issues, the politics of gender inequality, gender dimensions of laws and gendered aspects of cultural norms and values that intersect with education.
A pre-conference tour will take place on Thursday May 28th, providing an opportunity for the delegates to network with each other prior to the early-start of the conference the following morning. We would like to thank Kinsey Institute for their kind support in organising the pre-conference tour.*
The conference reception will be held at Grunwald Gallery of Art on Friday May 29, 2015 after 5pm. Attendees will get the opportunity to explore the museum in an open-house format. The museum will also be hosting the Kinsey Juried Art Show during this time.
The conference programme is set to be finalised and announced three weeks before the conference commences.
1. Gender and hierarchy: this theme looks at the different formation of hierarchies in institutions, higher education and workplaces, and investigates how culture of the institutions, equal or unequal payment, administration structure indicates the existence of hierarchical structures based on gender.
2. Gender parity: Gender disparity may have different priorities depending on the situation of the countries in question. In some cases, it may refer to equal access to primary, secondary or higher education, literacy rate, employment, equal payment and so on. This theme includes researches that explore the access to education and inequalities between sexes.
3. Policies and gender inequalities: Gender issues are visible in many areas of life and there are many reasons behind gender inequalities. This theme explores the impact of policies and legislations that create gender inequality in different settings.
4. Cultural impacts and gender: Cultural norms and values are influential in defining gender roles and structuring hierarchical structures in societies. It is aimed to understand to social dynamics of the society behind social disparities and discuss invisible hindrances affects the life of individuals.
5. Gender discourses: discourses in societies, institutions or particular settings not only express the thoughts, but also includes the practice, change and transformations. The purpose of this theme is to look at the dynamics of the change in society and explore the impact of changes on gender discourses.
6. Gender, education and schooling: Each individual has right to be treated equally. Although the right of equality of human beings are protected by laws, in practice there are many examples of discriminations in life. This theme particularly explores discriminations and inequalities against individuals in educational settings since schools are generally considered as the agent of transferring social norms and values to next generations. It is aimed to explore what kind of activities, materials and instructions cause gender discrimination in schools.
7. Gender and mobility: this theme addresses gender related issues in migration, refugee and student mobility context. What kind of solutions and actions are required to touch upon gender discrimination in any kind of human mobility? What are the patterns that individuals follow in their choice of mobility?
8. Education and the law: Laws prohibiting violence against women are insufficient, inadequate, not respected or poorly enforced but is change possible at the community level with education? What is the importance of education in community level change by targeting discriminatory cultural and religious practices for development in gendered perspectives?
9. Ideal society: If we would become acquainted with the legislation and the manners of a nation, we must begin by the study of social nation. What is the role of education when creating the ideal society like Plato dreamed up?
10. History of gender and education: How have educational policies and practices of schooling evolved through time and by culture and country? What have been the gendered dimensions of such changes as associated with shifting state-society positioning, and as connected with factors like modernization, citizenship-/nation-building, secularism and/or religious politics, and changing views of the place of girls and women in society?
