Duties and responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the Chief, Engineering and Development Section, International Monitoring System Division (IMS):

  • Provide engineering and project management expertise to lead the planning, design and technical implementation of the work of the International Monitoring Systems Division (IMS) related to the construction, installation, certification, operations, maintenance, major repairs, recapitalization and revalidation of IMS seismic and infrasound facilities;
  • Provide seismic and infrasound scientific expertise to enhance the detection capability of IMS facilities, develop metrics for data quality control, refine certification procedures, develop and update technology roadmaps, implement and review calibration procedures, follow-up on new technology developments, prepare and lead expert group meetings;
  • Provide scientific, engineering and technical solutions on all matters relating to the establishment and sustainment of the seismic and infrasound component of the IMS;
  • Perform senior level system engineering including requirements management, system concept development, process definition, design validation, performance verification;
  • Establish technical terms of reference for station activities, work with the Procurement Section in international bidding, perform technical evaluations of bids and supervise execution of contracts;
  • Prepare and present scientific, engineering and technical material for Working Group B, the Preparatory Commission, IMS training programmes as well as for technical workshops;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Advanced university degree in geophysics, earth sciences, engineering or a related field.
  • At least seven years of relevant working experience in seismic and/or infrasound data acquisition systems, including system design, data quality control, calibration, instrument responses, data exchange formats.
  • Relevant working experience in programming languages, UNIX-based computer systems, data processing tools, relational databases, computer network principles, communications technology, TCP/IP networking concepts.
  • Relevant working experience in project management and system engineering.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are essential. Working knowledge of one of the other official languages of the CTBTO Preparatory Commission is an asset.
