The Department of Earth Science has a vacancy for a postdoctoral fellow in geophysics, funded by ARCEx.

The postdoctoral fellowship is a fixed-term position; the chief objective being to qualify the selected candidate for work in senior positions in his/her discipline. This position is for a fixed term of 2 years. It is not possible for any person to work under more than one fixed term appointment as a postdoctoral fellow for the same institution.

Project/work tasks:

The position is linked to a collaboration project between the universities in Tromsø, Oslo and Norwegian University of Science and Technology, and the work is by experimental and theoretical studies to emphasize how acoustic waves can be used to reveal ice conditions and geological formations below an ice-covered surface.

The candidate will work with models describing visco-elastic properties of ice and principles for acoustic imaging.

Qualifications and personal qualities:
  • You must have completed a doctoral degree in physics, mathematics, or mathematical geophysics, or a related field, or have submitted your doctoral thesis for evaluation before expiry of the application deadline. It is a requirement that the doctoral degree has been completed before the decision to appoint can be made;
  • You should have a suitable background in acoustic wave propagation and acoustic imaging;
  • You must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and to demonstrate good collaborative skills;
  • You must have the ability to work in interdisciplinary research groups;
  • You must be proficient in both written and oral English.
