For the Research Unit ICRI / CIR we are looking for a senior legal researcher with particular interest and expertise in datasecurity and cybersecurity law.

ICRI/CIR Senior Researcher (postdoc) data security / cybersecurity law (m/f)

ICRI/CIR is a research centre at the Faculty of Law of KU Leuven focussing on legal issues arising in the information society and on intellectual property. ICRI/CIR is a founding member of the LEUVEN Center on Information and Communication Technology (www.kuleuven.be/LICT/) and, together with colleagues from the Faculty of Engineering, a member of the security department within iMinds (www.iminds.be).
The centre has a strong international focus and is cooperating with leading academic institutions from all across the world, amongst others through its involvement in many EU-funded research projects. Its close proximity to the European institutions in Brussels, facilitates intellectual exchanges with decision makers at EU level.

The candidate is expected to carry out legal research in the area of data security and cybersecurity  law in the context of interdisciplinary projects funded by the European Union under its Research & Innovation programmes (7th FP, Horizon 2020) and by other international, national or regional funding agencies.
He/she is also expected to mentor junior researchers and coach researchers performing doctoral research in this area.
The successful candidate is expected to develop a research strategy addressing new challenges with regard to legal aspects of ICT data security, in close collaboration with the centre’s professors and with colleagues from LICT and iMinds.
A core task of this position is the acquisition of third-party funding facilitating the sustainable development of this research agenda. He/she will act as the centre’s contact person for new research proposals in the fields of data security and cybersecurity law in cooperation with interdisciplinary consortia.
The ideal candidate enjoys working with a multidisciplinary team of researchers and actively contributes to the intellectual exchange but also the management of the research unit.
The successful candidate is expected to publish in top-rated journals and open-access outlets and to give presentations at national and international conferences.
There are no teaching obligations attached to this position, but taking up limited lecturing activities within the existing curricula at bachelor, master and advanced master level is possible.
This position is an ideal opportunity for a legal scholar who wishes to deepen and/or broaden his/her academic expertise in one of the leading research centres in Europe in the field of ICT and IP law.
It allows for the development of an outstanding academic profile that combines empirical and theoretical originality, multidisciplinary perspectives and management expertise on an international level.


You have a PhD (or will complete it within 6 months) in law in the field of data security / (cyber)security / cybercrime or in a closely related domain; In case that you have not yet completed your thesis you will provide letters of your supervisors stating the expected date of completion of the thesis and their expectation that you are indeed able to have completed the thesis on that date;
You can analyse legal problems in this domain of law in a creative way and propose clear and valuable solutions in an interdisciplinary context;
You have expertise in writing research proposals. You can translate new research questions in successful project proposals, together with partners from academia, the private sector and government;
You are driven to share your research and knowledge with others through academic publications and through presentations at top-level scientific conferences and workshops;
Relevant experience is an advantage and will be acknowledged;
You have or are willing to build an extensive network in the data security and privacy community;
You are an excellent coach for junior researchers;
You have good communication and writing skills, particularly in English;
You are flexible and can work both independently and in team.
