At the Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology – Hans Knöll Institute (HKI) we investigate the pathobiology of human-pathogenic fungi and identify targets for the development of novel natural product-based antibiotics. The Department of Microbial Pathogenicity Mechanisms invites applications for a

PhD position / Early Stage Researcher

in the field of Microbiology / Infection Biology / Cellular Microbiology. The project will be associated to the European Innovative Training Network (ITN) “OPATHY – Omics of PATHogenic Yeasts” within the Horizon2020 Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions.

Project background – Fungi infect billions of people annually, kill as many people as tuberculosis or malaria and are a major problem in the clinical setting. OPATHY is an innovative translational research training network that will explore the potential of next-generation high-throughput technologies, including genomics, transcriptomics and proteomics, to study the interactions of yeasts that cause disease to humans (e.g. Candida and Cryptococcus sp.) with their host, and to develop new diagnostic tools to monitor yeast infections in the clinic.

In this project, we will investigate the interaction of the pathogenic yeasts C. albicans and C. glabrata with host epithelial and endothelial cells and will elucidate the molecular pathogenicity mechanisms and transcriptional profiles of both the pathogen and the host.

Eligibility criteria – All researchers recruited in an ITN must be Early-Stage Researchers (ESRs). ESRs shall, at the time of recruitment by the host organisation, be in the first four years of their research careers and not yet have been awarded a doctoral degree. Researchers can be of any nationality. They are required to undertake transnational mobility (i.e. move from one country to another) when taking up their appointment. One general rule applies to the appointment of researchers: At the time of recruitment by the host beneficiary, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host beneficiary for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date.

Short stays such as holidays and/or compulsory national service are not taken into account. The appointed researcher must not have spent more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to their recruitment in the same appointing organisation.

Candidate’s profile – We expect a Master´s degree (or equivalent) in Life Sciences (e.g. Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology). Furthermore, the applicant should be able to perform team-oriented as well as independent work. Practical experiences in one or more of the following subjects are beneficial: Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Infection Biology, Cellular Biology. Practical experience in cell culture, microarrays or fungal genetics is an advantage.

We offer – The successful candidates will be hosted at the Department of Microbial Pathogenicity Mechanisms (MPM, Prof. Bernhard Hube) at the HKI. The department is embedded in the outstanding scientific environment of the Beutenberg Campus providing state-of-art research facilities and a highly integrative network of life science groups. We offer a multifaceted scientific project with excellent technical facilities, a place in a young, committed team, as well as strong scientific collaborations. Furthermore, the successful candidates will take part in the extensive OPATHY training programme which includes individual research projects, Network-wide training activities, and training in entrepreneurship, translational research, and innovation, including secondments for all ESRs.

The length of individual appointments for an ESR will be at least 36 months within a network.

For further information, please contact Prof. Dr. Bernhard Hube,

Complete applications in English should include a CV, list of publications, brief statement of research experiences, a list of three potential references, and should be submitted until 15.09.2015 referring to HKI job posting No. 18/2015 to
