Main Purpose

As a member of a team led by the Section Head, the Analytical Chemist is responsible for ICP-MS and AAS analyses of trace elements including trouble-shooting of the instruments, supports the preparation and characterization of materials suitable as reference materials or proficiency test materials with a strong focus on metrological aspects as documented by participation to key comparisons and pilot studies organised, e.g., by the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM) for leading metrological institutions worldwide. The Analytical Chemist facilitates environmental assessment activities by quantification of trace elements in any environmental material of organic or inorganic origin, and acts as Technical Officer for relevant TC projects.

The Analytical Chemist acts as an expert for the analytical techniques applied, develops further those techniques and contributes to their successful application on international scale. In this respect s/he leads other staff supporting the preparation of samples for analysis and advises other laboratories in best practises for successful application of these techniques. An important role is the inclusion of chemical trace analyses to other areas covered in the Reference Product subprogramme, including reference materials characterized so far only for radionuclides or for stable isotopic composition. The Analytical Chemist will work in a matrix environment together with reference material specialists and other analytical staff of TEL.

Functions/Key Results Expected

Initiate and participate in the production of new reference materials for trace element composition after careful review of scientific needs and linkages to other IAEA programmes, and participate in continuous quality monitoring of existing reference materials;

Represent the IAEA in relevant metrological activities of leading institutions on trace element analysis, and represent the IAEA in international meetings;

Perform - in cooperation with other staff – proficiency tests and interlaboratory comparisons to assess laboratory quality assurance on worldwide basis, prepare reports on results and potentially improve external laboratory performance by authoritative guidance;

Participate effectively in the sales activities of IAEA reference materials by technical guidance and practical involvement; participate in the yearly inventory assessment of reference materials in relation to requirements for IAEA (IPSAS accounting);

Advise other laboratories in the chemical analysis of trace elements, perform and optimise trace element analyses including work towards establishment of a laboratory quality system, prepare reports and scientific publications and act as technical officer for TC projects.

Qualifications, Experience and Skills
  • Bachelor's Degree - University degree in chemistry, physics, environmental sciences or a related scientific field with a demonstrated strong laboratory component in the field of trace element analysis.
  • Minimum of five years of relevant professional experience in the field of analytical chemistry.
  • Publications in the fields of specialization
  • Extensive experience in AAS, ICP-OES and ICP-MS techniques for trace element analysis in environmental samples.
  • Keen interest and demonstrated skills in development of analytical techniques.
  • Working knowledge on application of reference materials for calibration and quality control.
  • Existing knowledge on organization of proficiency tests and large analytical programs for characterization of material properties being an advantage.
  • Demonstrated ability to efficiently train staff of other laboratories and to transfer knowhow on proper use of analytical techniques.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to foster effective cooperation in a multicultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (i.e. Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) desirable.
