DESCRIPTION: Global trade, supply chains, financial markets, and industrial clusters are examples of interconnected systems that are important to the structure and function of the modern world.  Networks are a general yet powerful means of representing patterns of connections or interactions between parts of such systems.  The network approach facilitates an understanding of mechanisms and reveals patterns in the data that are difficult to see using other approaches. A network approach has the potential to uncover structural properties of product specialization, comparative advantage, industrial clustering and economic growth that have hitherto not been examined in the literature. This in turn can lead to important implications for industrial and development policy.

The concepts and methods of network analysis have been applied to the study of international trade since the late nineteen seventies, and over the last three decades have been applied to address numerous research questions in the field of economics and business. Key themes investigated through the study of the international trade and investment network include economic development, globalization, financial contagion, preferential trade agreements, the topology of the trade network, global value chains, as well as statistical and methodological issues.

The objective of this session is to explore how to further integrate network analysis into studies of international trade and FDI. We particularly welcome papers that attempt to contribute to an understanding of fragmentation of production, globalization and regionalization, intra-firm trade, global value chains, business groups, and the application of both descriptive statistics and advanced network models to international trade and investment datasets.
