Our encounters with sacred and secularized images and objects are multifarious. In popular visual culture such as film, photography, art, as well as literary fiction, visual and textual representations of sacred and secularized issues, images and objects, can be discussed in a number of historical as well as contemporary contexts, such as the rise of nationalism, religious fanaticism, or the hype of the individual, which may be connected to specific cultural practices of representation. The seminar aims to establish a comparative perspective and invites papers that trace and analyse the secular icon in both post-colonial and western traditions. The seminar format is intended to encourage lively participation on the part of both speakers and members of the audience. For this reason, papers will be orally presented in no longer than 15 minutes rather than read. Reduced versions of the papers will be circulated beforehand among participants. For further directions please consult the ESSE conference website.
