his special issue aims to understand the role of social movements in bringing about (or failing to bring about) political and social transformation. We are interested in this topic broadly, and prepared to consider papers from a wide range of perspectives with psychology as a central theme. We are particularly interested in the bi-directional association between social movements and what Galtung (1969) has called direct, cultural, and structural violence and peace. This special issue aims to address questions such as How do social movements or collective actors transform structurally violent societies? How do structurally violent societies transform social movements or collective actors? How do social movements challenge or reinforce cultural violence? How do collective actors respond to direct violence by the state? How does the state respond to direct violence by collective actors? When direct violence is employed by some collective actors for a cause, what is the result for the effectiveness of non-violent collective actors working for the same cause, and vice versa? How do the citizens’ participation in the Psychology of Dictatorship (see Moghaddam, 2013) or the Psychology of Democracy (see Moghaddam, 2016) affect reactions to state and non-state violence? We are also interested in the relationship between social movements, radicalization, and non-violence or violence. A few additional points: We invite studies on social and political transformation that make a connection to macro-level change. A focus on individual-level variables within a research study is welcome, but if so authors must engage thoughtfully about how any individual-level changes or outcomes would or would not flow through to social and political change. We are open to qualitative and quantitative research, and to survey, experimental, and longitudinal studies.
