In the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, £3.9 million will be invested directly in supporting early career researchers and PhD students, enhancing our Arts and Humanities Research Council accredited Northern Bridge Doctoral Training Partnership (in collaboration with Durham University and Queen's University Belfast) and Economic and Social Research Council accredited North-East Doctoral Training Centre (with Durham University), which are recognised as national centres of excellence in doctoral training.

Awards and Interdisciplinarity

We welcome applications in any of the above specialisms.

Students with innovative interdisciplinary research projects across more than one specialism are also encouraged to apply. Please initiate contact with one of the relevant subject areas for advice.

Eligibility Criteria

The studentships are open to UK, EU and international applicants who propose to study for their PhD on a full-time basis.

Applicants must:
 - Hold at least a good upper-second class UK undergraduate degree and a Master’s level qualification, or their international equivalents
 - Be commencing their first year of a full-time PhD with the University in the 2016/17 academic year.

Current Newcastle University PhD students
- Students in their second year of study are eligible to apply if they were self-funded in their first year.
- Self-funded part-time students in their first or second year of study are eligible to apply if they change to full-time status.

Please insert code HREA16 in the studentship/partnership reference field to be considered for a Research Excellence Academy scholarship. If you are a current Newcastle University PhD student please contact your supervisor in the first instance for information on how to apply.

Candidates are advised to consult their prospective department or school to discuss their research plans and ensure there is a member of staff who can supervise their chosen thesis before making a formal online application.
