International Conference
Music and Human Mobility

The International Conference Music and Human Mobility (ICMHM’16) integrates the series of Conferences on Redefining Community in Intercultural Context (Brasov, Romania). In an initiative of the joint organization between the Institute of Ethnomusicology – Center for Studies in Music and Dance, of the School of Social Sciences and Humanities, of the New University of Lisbon (FCSH/NOVA), Portugal and the Air Force Academy Henri Coanda of Romania, in Brasov, ICMHM’16 promotes diversified scientific and performance perspectives. It takes place at the School of Social Sciences and Humanities in Lisbon, at the centre of the city, from 7th to 9th of June 2016.

 The ICMHM’16 proposes theoretical and applied reflections, expression of good practices, critical perspectives and proposals in arts education, intercultural experience and understanding of citizenship; discussions and experiments about music composition, production and reception; and diversified interpretations of relationships between music and educational and cultural management around three theoretical topics, not limiting to them, departing from the relation between music and human mobility:

1. Culture, identity and globalization;

2. Musical performance and migration;

3. International business and contact of cultures through music.

The ICMHM’16 proposes also three areas of performance in workshops of vocal and instrumental music and dance / body expression.

Involving Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts, the ICMHM’16 welcomes participation in different approaches and formats. For the theoretical and applied discussions it invites the participants to present individual papers, panels, round tables, animation as well as participation in workshops of vocal and instrumental music performance and dance; and posters about experiences of conception, production and reception of music in contexts of human mobility. ICMHM’16 welcomes multiple theoretical and methodological approaches, diversified reflections and experiences of performance, integrating situations of construction and representation of identity, musical performance and reception of life or mediated music in diversified contexts of mobility and of intercultural and international negotiation under different perspectives.

With a rich academic and social program, with diversified production and reception of music performance, between Lisbon and Sintra, ICMHM’16 counts with the participation of keynote speakers such as Michael Fuhr (Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media, Germany) about music and transnational production from South Korea; John Baily (Goldsmiths, University of London, United Kingdom) about musical performance in the Afghan Islamic diaspora and Heung-wah Wong (University of Hong Kong, China), about the role of music in the international business in China and Japan. The ICMHM’16 counts also with the participation of key animators for workshops, such as Mostafa Anwar (New University of Lisbon, Portugal) on accompanied classic and semi-classical Sufi singing; Veronica Doubleday (Independent researcher and artist, London, United Kingdom) on Muslim women's domestic songs; and Kátia Leonardo (Independent Artist, Portugal) and José Dias (New University of Lisbon, Portugal) on jazz and body expression.

 The ICMHM’16 calls for participation in the varied scientific and performance domains in the languages of the organization (Portuguese and English), and also in Spanish and French. It includes a visit to the emblematic village of Sintra, symbol of coexistence of multiple heritage influences (Arab, Germanic, British, French, Indian, Tibetan among many others) testifying human mobility.
