A conference on the evolution of language and historical language change at Indiana University. These topics have attracted increasing interest in recent years yet many scholars of these issues work in relative isolation from potential colleagues. The 8th International Conference in Evolutionary Linguistics (CIEL-8) will be held August 8-10, 2016 at Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana, with the goal of providing an international venue for this work. Talks as well as poster submissions are welcome. Abstracts of 500-1,000 words should be submitted no later than June 15, 2016 (instructions available at the conference website: http://www.indiana.edu/~brainevo/CIEL8/). We anticipate a maximum 2 week turnaround after receiving your submission). Registration will also begin on June 15, 2016.
Previous CIEL conferences have been held in China in Guangzhou, Tianjin, Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong, Xiamen, and, most recently, in Tianjin. These conferences have served as a platform for international cross-disciplinary exchange on aspects of evolutionary linguistics, thus promoting the development of this field of research. CIEL-8 will be the first conference in this series held outside of China. Indiana University is honored to be the host for 2016. We invite all scholars interested in language and its evolution (cultural or biological) to participate.
Our current list of Invited Speakers includes: William S.-Y. Wang (Hong Kong Polytechnic University; Emeritus U.C. Berkeley), Salikoko Mufwene (University of Chicago), Jackson Gandour (Purdue University), Kong Jiangping (Peking University), Wu Yicheng (Zhejiang University), Jared Taglialatela (Kennesaw State University).
