Economic shocks have devastating impacts on individuals, in ways both humanitarian and economic. Developing countries are particularly vulnerable to these effects and the damage caused by economic shocks impacts their development processes, setting-back poverty reduction efforts. The economic analysis, amongst other lenses, focuses on incremental changes and neglects fundamental ones, which could affect the stability of systems and existing framework conditions.

During recent decades, there has been an increasing volume of research in various disciplines regarding risk and risk management - particularly under the banner of ‘resilience’. Nevertheless gaps remain in the analysis of sudden and unpredictable events and their substantial impacts on both individual households and whole economies.

There is a lack of interdisciplinary consideration and complex interdependences are often neglected. This conference aims at a deeper exchange across academic borders, with a particular focus on researchers in the early stages of their career.

Researchers working on the following topics are welcome to submit an extended abstract or paper. However, this does not exclude other contributions in the broader scope of the conference. Theoretical, empirical and policy-oriented works will be considered for presentation.

Scope of shocks (health shocks, natural hazards, political conflicts, macroeconomic events etc.)
Consequences of shocks (poverty, human capital, long-/short-term effects etc.)
Types of coping instruments (insurance, international aid, community networks, migration, etc.)
