The processes involving electron, ions, positrons, and photons of low energies (below a few keV) under a wide range of conditions have, in recent years, been recognized in many interdisciplinary research areas, spanning both the fundamental and applied sciences. For example low energy interactions (LEIs) are important in diverse fields such as: plasma science, nanolithography, surface photochemistry, photovoltaic devices, radiation processing, astrochemistry and astrobiology, radiobiology, radiotherapy or mass spectrometry of solvated biomolecules.

The majority of previous LEI studies have focused on probing gas or condensed phases under high vacuum conditions, however most physicochemical processes occur under Earth’s atmospheric or extreme conditions, of which the latter are broadly conceived as conditions that experience high levels of radiation in space. Therefore, this Topical Issue focuses on the most recent advances in this field, both at the fundamental level of elementary processes, and at the more applied level, in order to provide a state-of-the-art description of current developments and discoveries.

Submissions are invited on topics including but not limited to:

 

  • low energy photons, electrons, positrons, and ions interactions with organic compounds of industrial and environmental importance
  • dissociative electron attachment to molecules relevant to biological and atmospheric processes
  • molecular evolution of astrochemical ices
  • planetary atmospheric physics
  • atmospheric pressure photoionization and fragmentation of large biopolymers
  • solvation effect on molecules
  • swarms and transport phenomena
  • processes and applications of atmospheric pressure plasmas
