Remote sensing of night-time light is an area of growing interest to remote sensing scientists, with a substantial community of scholars publishing on this topic. Night-time light imagery provides a perspective for the study human activities that differs greatly from that of conventional satellite remote sensing. Night-time light has been extensively used to investigate geographical and temporal trends in economic activity, population density, energy use and carbon emissions, regional development, natural disasters, the effects of conflict, fishing, light pollution, wildfires, aurora, etc. In recent years, the launch of a new generation of night-time light sensors, including the Suomi NPP-VIRRS and the high resolution-capable sensor EROS-B commercial satellite, has spurred additional interest in the topic.
