The SBCA is accepting abstracts and workshop proposals for participation in our 2017 annual conference on Improving the Theory and Practice of Benefit-Cost Analysis.
The SBCA is an international group of practitioners, academics and others who are working to improve the theory and application of the tools of benefit cost analysis (BCA). We welcome submissions that support the enhanced use of such analysis to promote evidence based decision making. We define BCA broadly, including cost analysis, cost effectiveness analysis, risk-benefit analysis, applied welfare economics, damage assessment and other methods. Applications in any public policy area are encouraged. For example, proposals may be in such areas as:
Civil and criminal justice
Education and training
Energy, natural resources, and environment
Finance and financial markets
Food and agriculture
Health, health insurance, and health care
International trade and development
Safety and security
Social welfare programs
State and local policy
Theory and methods
Transportation and infrastructure
Workforce and workplace.
Conference Presentations/Panel Abstracts
You may submit an abstract for a presentation or organize a full panel. A full panel may consist of a chair and either four presentations and a single discussant, or three presentations and two to three discussants. Individual presentations or panels may address the link between theory and practice, the methods used to estimate particular types of costs or benefits, the application of BCA to specific case studies, the role of BCA in decision making or any other relevant topic. We welcome submissions from scholars, practitioners, and others working in academia, nonprofits, business and government around the world. Abstracts must be between 200 to 300 words in length and clearly describe the research.
Interested in helping your colleagues develop new skills or learn about new topics? We welcome workshop proposals on any topic related to benefit-cost analysis that will be of interest to others working in this field. Workshops may address basic skills or emerging issues. Topics of interest to those working in academia, government, industry, or nonprofits, in the U.S. or elsewhere, are welcome. Examples include:
Basic skills related to conducting specific types of analysis
Current theoretical and methodological developments
Recent findings in particular policy areas
Approaches for effective communication of analytic results.
Workshops – either full or half-day – are offered the day preceding the conference. Workshops may be designed as mini-courses, panel discussions, highly interactive conversations, or other formats. Innovative approaches are welcome. Workshops may not be used for commercial purposes and must provide a balanced perspective.
