Solid State Light is the most promising technology for the future of lighting. Besides Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) which are well-known, the main research and development efforts are now in Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLEDs). Their unique properties allow diffusion of light from large area emitters, flexibility, and easy incorporation into 3D structures. They also cover all colors of the visible spectrum, allowing application in both general and decorative lighting as well as signage. OLEDs have created opportunities for applications that were difficult until now. Recent developments towards a simple white emitter structure accompanied by the possibility of color modulation have determined the future applications of OLEDs.
OLEDs can help advancement in lighting technology because they use materials which are, in theory, completely efficient internally and energetically efficient. They also use disposable organic materials with near zero harm to the environment while making brighter devices possible. Market attractiveness is another important factor. These qualities combine to give OLEDs a significant market interest in the near future for everyday artificial lighting. These factors encourage continuous research to tackle some questions of viability.
We invite researchers to contribute to this special issue. The main purpose is to publish high-quality research papers as well as review articles focused on OLEDs for Solid State Lighting which address recent research and development achievements as well as potential problems to be overcome.
Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
White OLEDs
OLEDs in general signage
Large area OLED production: techniques, uniformity, and homogeneity
Thermal effects of large area OLEDs
New materials for OLED lighting
Stability and OLEDs lifetime: electrical, chemical, and photodegradation
Improvement of OLED light outcoupling
OLED color modulation and stability
Flexible OLEDs and architectural incorporation
Human benefits of diffusion and the color tone ability of OLED lighting
OLED encapsulation for lighting
Disposal and recycling of OLEDs
