General Requirements for Prospective Observers

To consider applying, prospective observers should meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Enthusiastic about learning how medical care is provided in a major American health system
  • An enrolled medical student in good standing or graduate of an accredited medical school
  • Affiliated with an institution outside of the United States, or an international student in the United States
  • Fluent in English
  • Capable of traveling to and being admitted to the United States

Prospective applicants can obtain an application and information on pricing by contacting us directly by phone or email. All documents should be provided in English. It is recommended to submit application materials at least 6 weeks in advance of the desired start date. If necessary, some applicants may be asked to participate in an online video interview to assess their fluency in English.  After we confirm acceptance to the program, applicants will receive an Acceptance Letter, which may be presented to a Hospital, University, Consulate, and/or Immigration as necessary. Applicants will be required to confirm acceptance shortly after receipt of the Acceptance Letter.

Every application package will include the following:

  • Observership application form (including specialty preference)
  • Curriculum Vitae/Resumé
  • Copy of passport (and visa documentation as appropriate)
  • 2 Letters of Recommendation
  • Letter of character reference (criminal background report)
  • Copy of medical diploma (graduates only)
  • Immunization record and medical history
  • Current PPD screens from past year
  • Proof of international medical insurance
  • Payment information (half of total fee to be charged at time of acceptance).

Additional Information:

Specialties and Sub-Specialties:  We will do our best to accommodate your requested department if the area(s) are available. The AHN medical faculty directory can be found here.

Fees: Fees are generally based on the duration of the observer's stay and are exclusive of travel and living expenses. Quotes on the fees that will be charged can be obtained by contacting us directly. Half of total observership cost is charged at time of acceptance; the remaining balance to be charged 2-3 weeks prior to start date.

Refunds & Changes: Fees are only refunded:  1) If we cannot place you or 2) You are unable to obtain a visa to travel. Cancel & Reschedule requests are subject to availability. Any observers requesting a change to their scheduled observership will be charged $200.  We discourage requests for changing your date/department after applying and we may not be able to accommodate such requests due to limited availability.

Working Hours: Clinic (outpatient) services are typically 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday through Friday. Hospital services vary with each department. The Elective Coordinator in each department will provide your specific working hours. US-recognized holidays, such as Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. are observed.

Emergency Medical Care and International Medical Insurance: All observers are required to have International Medical Insurance.
