Infrared spectroscopy as a tool to analyze individual and composite materials

Deconvolution of the IR spectrum of fumed alumina/silica/titania in the range of asymmetric Si-O stretching vibrations

FTIR spectra of nanosilica A-300 at different amounts of adsorbed water (excess water from 1.2 g/g to 30 mg/g) desorbed in air for approximately 40 min.

Practically all organic and inorganic compounds have characteristic bands in infrared (IR) spectra, e.g. silica has a narrow band of free silanols.

The IR spectroscopy can be used as a tool to obtain a “fingerprint” of any compound.  Mid-wavelength IR spectra (300-4000 cm-1) of individual matters (powders, tablets, films) or mixtures, e.g. with KBr or oil, could be analyzed in respect to selected bands. This gives information on composition and structure of samples. Additionally, for silica based composites, the specific surface area and surface content of a silica phase could be estimated.  The IR spectra give information on intermolecular interactions that is of importance for complex materials, especially nanostructured.
