Most work on membrane trafficking and cytoskeleton dynamics in higher eukaryotes has been carried out on unpolarized tissue culture cells, while research on cell polarity has focused on the steady state distribution of asymmetric cellular components rather than on the dynamics of polarized secretion, endocytosis and subcellular forces. It is now clear, however, that the establishment and maintenance of cell polarity depends on the polarized trafficking of secretory and endocytic vesicles, and in the dynamic activity of the cytoskeleton. Furthermore, both vesicle trafficking and cytoskeleton dynamics must be under the control of cortical polarity factors. Stimulated by the previous three ESF/EMBO meetings on this topic, many researchers are now very actively investigating how the polarity trafficking systems and dynamic forces interact. This synthesis between these previously unrelated fields has also been facilitated by recent advances in microscopy, which are making it possible for the first time to visualize subcellular vesicles and dynamic cytoskeleton fibers inside living cells. Thus, a fourth meeting on this topic would provide a timely opportunity to discuss recent progress in this fast moving area and to consider the major open questions and challenges in the field.
illustrationInvited speakers will include well-established investigators but participation by young investigators will be intensely accentuated. Speakers for short talks will also be selected from the poster abstracts, to provide opportunities for presentation of the newest findings. The EMBO Conference will include sessions on: Mechanobiology and mathematical models, Polarity in the immune response, Planar Polarity, Mitotic Spindle Orientation, Polarized trafficking, Stem cells and Cancer, Endocytic pathways in polarity, and Epithelial polarity in development and regeneration.
Overall, this 2017 EMBO Conference at Eden Roc (Sant Feliu de Gixols, Spain) will provide an exciting combination of basic and translational research topics in cell polarity and membrane dynamics. Together they will facilitate discussion of cutting edge research, and will nurture new ideas and collaborations that will help drive the field forward.
