The Department of Earth Science (GEO; www.uib.no/geo/en) invites applications for a researcher position in OBS seismology. The position is for a period of 2 years starting from 1 January 2018, and is associated with the EU-funded INTAROS (Integrated Arctic Observation System) project.

 

About the project/work tasks

    The overall objective of INTAROS is to build an efficient integrated Arctic Observation System (iAOS) by extending, improving and unifying existing systems in the different regions of the Arctic. The iAOS will be a multidisciplinary system covering the ocean, atmosphere, cryosphere and the solid earth.
    The main tasks of Department of Earth Science will be to assess and further develop earthquake monitoring in the Arctic, including the deployment of ocean bottom seismometers (OBS) and processing of the collected data. Further tasks include developing an earthquake and focal mechanism catalogue for the Arctic and developing community-based observation systems in Svalbard and the Disco Bay region, Greenland.
    Some travel activity in connection with project meetings and fieldwork is to be expected.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

    The applicant must hold a PhD or an equivalent degree within seismology, geophysics or a related field, or must have submitted his/her doctoral thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded.
    Experience from OBS deployment and data processing, and earthquake data processing in general, is an advantage.
    Experience with seismology in the Arctic will be an advantage.
    Knowledge related to instrumentation and programming is an advantage.
    The applicant must work independently and in a structured manner, and have the ability to cooperate with others.
    Proficiency in both written and oral English is a requirement.

    salary at pay grade 57 (code 1109/ pay range 24, alternative 1) according to the state salary scale upon appointment (this constitutes a gross annual salary of NOK 486 100). Further increases will be made according to length of service in the position. In the case of a particularly highly qualified applicant, a higher salary may be considered.
