The Center for Reproductive Rights (the Center) is a nonprofit legal advocacy organization dedicated to advancing reproductive freedom as a fundamental right that all governments are legally obligated to respect, protect, and fulfill. Internship Summary: The Center's Global Legal Program (GLP) is looking for an enthusiastic, resourceful and highly organized law student intern with a commitment to reproductive rights issues to engage in a variety of legal research and writing projects related to GLP's fact-finding, advocacy, and litigation in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and at the United Nations. This internship, which will be based at our New York headquarters, will provide the successful candidate with experience using legal advocacy and international human rights law to advance reproductive rights around the world.

The internship is part-time and ideally will begin in September 2017 and extend through December 2017. Exact schedule is flexible according to the student's academic schedule, but preference will be given to candidates that are available for a minimum of 15 hours/week spread over multiple days. To participate in this internship, interns will need to receive academic credit or a stipend from their schools.

Responsibilities:

The scope of this internship may cover, but is not limited to:

    Conducting legal and policy research and analysis on international law, human rights law, and foreign and comparative law;
    Supporting the Global Legal Program's litigation and advocacy efforts by assisting with drafting legal petitions, shadow letters to United Nations bodies, briefing papers, internal memorandums, and other advocacy documents; and
    Using editing skills to assist with bluebooking and fact-checking of reports, petitions, shadow letters, and other documents as needed.

Qualifications:

    Current 2nd or 3rd year law student in good standing and based in the New York City area during the Fall 2017 semester;
    Exceptional legal research and writing ability;
    Demonstrated knowledge of international law, international human rights, women's rights, or other related fields;
    Demonstrated interest in a career in reproductive rights or human rights litigation or advocacy;
    Fluency in English is required; Working proficiency in a second language is a plus; and
    Familiarity with United Nations human rights bodies and mechanisms is a plus.
