nternship - Engineering and Science
Company OverviewEDF Energy is a core part of the EDF Group and is one of the largest energy companies in Europe with key business operations in France, the UK, Germany and Italy. In the UK we have approximately 15,000 employees. We are the UK’s leading generator and supplier of low carbon energy. We produce about one-fifth of the nation’s electricity from our nuclear, coal and gas power stations, wind farms, and combined heat and power plants. We have a focus on safe, dependable energy generation and an ethos of service excellence. We intend to play a leading role in new nuclear build in the UK and secure a ‘bright’ future for the combined business and its employees.
Business Unit OverviewGenerating electricity is a huge responsibility, which is why we want experienced engineers to help us deliver this. From nuclear power stations to coal, gas and renewables, our work extends to the full energy mix. The roles we offer within each of those areas are every bit as diverse. At EDF Energy, we’re on a journey to change the way people use energy for generations to come. Producing low carbon energy is what we do best. And right now, our eight existing nuclear sites generate 9,000 megawatts per year through various reactors, avoiding emissions of over 40m tonnes of carbon dioxide. That’s the equivalent of taking about 60% of cars off our roads. Our thermal generation assets are our Cottam and West Burton stations. With almost 45 years of generation, our coal stations still have an important role to play – together with our new Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) and Gas Storage Plants supporting an affordable and secure supply of electricity as the UK transitions to a low carbon economy. Our plan now is to secure strategic flexibility and maximise the long-term value of thermal energy within the EDF Energy portfolio.
Vacancy OverviewOur 12 week summer placements provide an excellent opportunity to gain insights into life and work at EDF Energy. We’ll provide you with challenging assignments – and all the support you’ll need to make the most of the experience - and at the end of your placement you may even be offered the opportunity to be assessed for one of our Graduate Programmes.
Nature and ScopeAt a power station, you could expect to take on a junior hands-on role: perhaps developing your fault-finding skills; project managing minor projects; supporting safety at work; examining feasibility cases to extend stations’ lifetimes; or carrying out maintenance and installing new equipment. Because our power stations are often big local employers, you’ll find there’s a real sense of pride and a close community in each one.

Alternatively, at Barnwood or East Kilbride, you could be involved in a project to support our nuclear power stations, again taking a role as part of a team. Because these offices are where our teams tackle design engineering, lifetime planning for the reactors, outages and large projects, you’ll find yourself surrounded by highly qualified professionals, taking a broader, more strategic view.
Principal AccountabilitiesWe have high expectations for the students we take on: we’re looking for people at any stage of their university education who are genuinely interested in nuclear energy, and who want to take ownership of their experience on the placement.

Skills and QualificationsWe’re eager for you to achieve a great deal – and we want to see that eagerness reflected in you, too. You don’t need to be an expert already, but you’ll be working towards a degree in an appropriate subject as below:

Electrical Engineering, Control and Instrumentation, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Maths, Chemistry, Physics, Health Physics, Environmental Science or Materials Science/Metallurgy.
