With every phase of the industrial era, our livelihood comes under threat. In the first instance, the rise of the first industrial revolution has disrupted the integrity of the fabric of society by gradually eroding the influence of community upon individuals. The second instance saw an increased emphasis on mass production of goods and greater demand for efficiency on behalf of the individuals, often at the expense of the latter's quality of life. At the third juncture, automation have become even more ubiquitous with computers and information technology steadily became the main force that drives the society forward, and with similarly devastating impact on society's well-being. As we are now at the dawn of yet another phase of the industrial revolution, it is therefore foreseeable that this fourth era of industrialization shall usher in a new set of challenges for human well-being and social development.

Thus, the third installment of the International Social Development Conference has chosen the era of the fourth industrial revolution, also known as Industry 4.0, as a timely theme to be discussed at length and serves to draw the public attention towards what is going to unfold in the next decades in terms of its impact on human and social development. The main focus of the conference however remains, as it has always been, with the idea of social development at its core. In keeping with the current trend, the notion of Industry 4.0 and the role of helping profession in particular, pose a subtext to the larger issue of social development and human well-being. It would indeed be interesting to posit a discourse on this and other sub themes that together point towards the question of sustainability of social development amidst the rapid change in technologies and ultimately, its impact on our own survival.

With this vision in mind, the School of Applied Psychology, Social Work and Policy, Universiti Utara Malaysia as the main organizer of the 3rd. ISDC proudly invites scholars, academics, policy makers, practitioners, students and concerned citizens from all around the world to gather in Kuala Lumpur in August 2018, to participate in this biennial event.
