The traditional account of indeterminacy holds that indeterminacy is a linguistic phenomenon arising from our concepts not having precisely delineated meanings and extensions. In recent decades this view has been challenged and the idea of metaphysical indeterminacy (or ontic vagueness) has been defended. However, the notion of metaphysical indeterminacy has proved controversial. Some claim its defenders are committed to indeterminate identity claims and that the notion of indeterminate identity is incoherent. Others believe that vague objects are unintelligible types of objects. Still others maintain that the only way to account for metaphysical indeterminacy is to replace it by precision.

Is indeterminacy a purely linguistic phenomenon? Are there good reasons to believe in metaphysical indeterminacy? Are the arguments against it conclusive? The workshop will focus on these questions, with a specific emphasis on indeterminate identity and its applications in personal identity and quantum phenomena.
