Open to: 3rd and 4th year undergraduates of law faculty, LLM students, law graduates (one or two years after), and non-governmental organization (NGO) lawyers

Date and Venue: July 21– 27, 2018, near Dnipro city, Ukraine

The NGO StateWatch, in collaboration with the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine, invites law students, LLM students, law graduates, and NGO lawyers working or interested in working in the field of criminal justice, to apply to participate in the “Criminal Justice in Action” summer school.

It will be conducted from July 21- 27, 2018, near Dnipro city, Ukraine. The main goal of the summer school is to develop future criminal justice professionals who are motivated to further reforms within the criminal justice system. Participants will receive both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, particularly in analyzing and resolving legal situations during criminal investigations and court proceedings. Different types of activities, such as role playing (conducting searches, direct and cross examinations, preparing opening and closing court statements, etc.) guided by leading experts and practitioners from Ukraine and the United States, will provide participants with practical knowledge on all aspects related to investigating and prosecuting crimes, particularly crimes involving corruption. The daily sessions will be interactive and include briefings, workshops, discussions, and mock trials. Accommodations, food, and program materials will be covered by the organizers. Participants will be responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from the venue. The working language of the summer school is English.

Eligibility In order to be considered eligible to apply, you must fulfill all of the following criteria: • Applicants should have a good understanding of criminal law and criminal procedures; • Applicants should be 3rd or 4th year undergraduates of law faculty, or LLM students, or law graduates (one or two years after graduation), or lawyers working for NGOs; • Applicants must be proficient in spoken and written English. All materials and activities will be done in English without translation.

Application Selection of the participants will be based on the quality of the application form, with an emphasis placed on the applicant’s motivation, and resume. The selection committee may conduct phone interviews. Please note that only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
