Historical past seems to cast a long shadow on the contemporary political, economic and social development. Differences in the levels of economic well-being and corruption, democracy and social inequality appear to be highly path dependent and driven by the legacies of long gone political and social entities. Countries of Eastern Europe and of the post-Soviet Eurasia, with their highly diverse historical backgrounds, are a fruitful empirical laboratory for studying these long-term historical effects, both associated with the Communist and the pre-Communist past. The conference intends to extensively debate whether and how the ‘slow-moving’ social factors determine the current developments in the post-Socialist societies. For instance, we intend to look at how cultural differences affect the economic and the social evolution; whether and how religion (both level of religiosity and religious denomination) matter for the economic and social behavior; how governments are able to create persistent social values, which outlive their rule; and under which conditions do values, practices and institutions show high levels of persistence and how do they survive major historical discontinuities like wars and revolutions.
The conference invites submissions dedicated to studying the role culture, religion and historical legacies play in the contemporary development of Eastern Europe, including both quantitative large-N studies and qualitative research. Papers are invited from various areas of economics (such as economic history, public economics, political economics and institutional economics), but also sociology and political science. For accepted presenters, accommodation and meals will be covered by the organizers of the conference. Travel expenses can be covered up to at most 150 € per person.
An application should contain an extended abstract of the paper (in English), as well as the academic CV or the link to the website of the prospective participant. Successful applicants will then be asked to submit the full version of their paper two weeks prior to the conference.
