The sixth iMean conference maintains its traditional focus on meaning in social interaction, with a thematic orientation to Weaving (broadly defined). In celebration of the conference’s move to New Zealand, we are embracing meaning and variation found within local and diverse networks. We encourage dialogue which is inclusive of both traditional and contemporary perspectives. We look forward to welcoming new communities to iMean and to New Zealand, weaving together innovative pathways to guide future research.

iMean6 aims to take a critical approach to and broad view of ‘weaving’ in the field, focused around (but not restricted to) the following themes:

- Working across disciplines and frameworks
- Innovative opportunities for sociopragmatic research
- Indigenous approaches to language use
- Diversity in and through languages
- New methods in discourse analysis and sociopragmatic research
- Meaning making in diverse networks
- Variation and meaning making in signed languages
- Ethnicity and marginalisation
- Norms and variation in im/polite language behaviour
