The LiDi conference series aims at discussing the scope of recent findings in the field of linguistics as they potentially connect to the development of new instructional methods in language teaching.
The 2nd LiDi conference focuses on Grammaticality Judgments & Language Awareness. So far, grammaticality judgments are mostly ignored in language teaching and only indirectly considered in the context of addressing grammatical errors. As phrases or sentences in most textbooks are labeled as either grammatically correct or incorrect, it is not surprising that many students feel that the concept of grammaticality is a binary one. In modern linguistics, however, it is well known that the notion of grammaticality does not correspond to what we can observe in (psycho)linguistic studies on grammaticality (e.g. Bard et al. 1996). The 2nd LiDi meeting starts out from the hypothesis that it can be extremely helpful for students’ language awareness to address linguistic phenomena at the borderline of grammaticality, in order to (i) illuminate this conceptual notion from a current scientific perspective and (ii) to also impart different empirical methods to measure grammaticality. Taking these points into consideration, students’ perception of language as a whole can be considerably improved and sharpened.
We invite all researchers interested in the topic and who are willing to discuss the question of how to incorporate the topic of grammaticality judgments into language teaching to attend the conference.
