New Orleans is one of America’s most culturally and historically rich cities. The birthplace of jazz, it is also notable for its proud literary heritage. Its iconic setting has inspired generations of American writers, such as Tennessee Williams, Kate Chopin, William Faulkner, John Kennedy Toole, and Anne Rice. From Easy Rider to Treme, its distinctive sights have been memorialized in film and television to form an indelible art of America’s cultural imagination. Renowned for its Mardi Gras celebrations, it is also recognized for bravery and vision in the face of devastation after Hurricane Katrina. It is a city that has had to rebuild and reinvent itself.

The College English Association celebrates its 50th anniversary with its 2019 national conference, to be held in the heart of the French Quarter. We invite you to join us at our annual meeting to explore the theme of vision and revision. CEA invites proposals from academics in all areas of literature, language, film, composition, pedagogy, and creative, professional, and technical writing. We are especially interested in presentations that feature topics relating to vision and/or revision in texts, disciplines, people, cultural studies, media, and pedagogy.

Special Topic: Academic Administrative Leadership

Potential areas of consideration include:

  • Reconceptualizing curricula by revising the English major, minors, concentrations, or course offerings
  • Taking a panoramic view by working with other programs/majors to foster interdisciplinarity, team-taught courses, learning opportunities, and/or increased enrollment
  • Sharing a vision through Writing Across the Curriculum and Writing Centers
  • Reviewing and looking ahead through assessment
  • Looking into the crystal ball by envisioning how course work may impact students’ post-graduation life through service learning, problem-/project-based learning, or other pedagogical strategies
